They answer each other
One laughs and the other asks what is so funny. One falls asleep and the other has something to say about it. Stroke one and the other gets jealous. They also react when one wakes up or starts dancing.
It is not a speaker with a face. This is what is inside, feature by feature, with its limits stated plainly.
What you use every day, without asking twice.
It reads your Google and Outlook calendars, several accounts at once, and tells you what is coming. The alerts sound even if there is no internet at that moment.
The three-dose medicine, the alarm, the gym. They go off on time even if Barto is asleep and even if the network is down.
Connected over Bluetooth to your iPhone, it tells you about calls and messages without the app open, and controls whatever music is playing.
Change its eyes, give it glasses and set its style from the app. And soon, more ways to make it yours.
It notices a stroke on its head, being picked up, being shaken — it gets dizzy — and being dropped: it complains and cries. Leave it alone and it falls asleep.
A life engine gives it a mood and needs of its own, and a bond with you that grows with how you treat it. It does not start each day from zero.
It stores several Wi-Fi networks by name — home, office — and connects to the one it recognizes. It also notices when it is in the car and adapts.
It opens your applications and your documents. You ask by voice or in writing, without dropping what you are doing.
It finds that file you cannot find, creates and moves folders and tidies up your downloads folder. You ask; it leaves everything in order.
“Make me laugh”, “teach me something”. It always has something new to tell you, and new content reaches it from the server on its own.
Improvements arrive over the air, at night and in silence. You do not have to plug it into anything or even notice.
From the app, under Privacy and data, you erase what the server knows about your Barto. Accounts you connected are not just unlinked: they are revoked.
Barto does not read things out in a synthetic voice: it has its own voice, full of personality, and its mouth moves along with what it says.
“What time is it?”, “what is the weather like?”, “is tomorrow a holiday?”. It answers right away, out loud, with no phone to look for.
“I just had an idea for a project…” Tell it, and it keeps it with no time and no alarm so you can pick it up later in the app.
Tell it who and what to say and it leaves the draft ready on your computer's screen. Sending it is always your call.
“I spent twenty thousand on lunch.” It files it and tells you where the month stands. For now it shows the figure in writing while we finish its voice.
If two things on your calendar overlap, it tells you there and then, and again the morning of that day. Even across different accounts.
“Volume to fifty”, “turn the brightness up”. No menus, no app: you say it and it stays that way.
When something is playing, it dances. And if it is low on battery it does not: being tired shows on it too.
Its eyes follow your finger. A tap brings out its buttons, and it asks you things with cards you tap or dismiss.
Stories it acts out on its screen, jokes, curious facts, lines worth hearing, songs in its own voice and your music. You ask out loud, and new content reaches it from the server with nothing for you to update.
It narrates and acts them out: full-screen scenes while its face follows the story. Two stories today. Needs Wi-Fi.
“Make me laugh.” It tells them with a happy face and will not repeat one until it runs out.
It sings in its own voice, with backing. Five traditional songs.
“Teach me something.” Surprised face included.
“Something to think about.” Short, for the moment.
Tell it you are sad and it answers, by your name if it knows it.
What is coming: Short classes and a Barto podcast are on the way. They will arrive the way all content does: from the server, to the Barto you already have.
Two Bartos in the same room recognize each other over Bluetooth, with nothing to pair and nothing to connect. From then on they stop being two devices and start being two characters.
One laughs and the other asks what is so funny. One falls asleep and the other has something to say about it. Stroke one and the other gets jealous. They also react when one wakes up or starts dancing.
The Bartos linked to your app form a group: they share your reminders, your notes and your calendar and mail accounts. What you tell one, the other knows.
In the same room only one gives the alert. You say “hey Barto” and the one that heard you loudest answers. The one in another room keeps alerting there, because that alert belongs to that room.
The neighbours feature ships switched off. When you link your second Barto the app asks whether to turn it on, and you can turn it off whenever you like. The range is short, a few metres: Bartos in different rooms ignore each other.
Everything Barto knows how to do is a plugin you install with one button: your calendar, your mail, the weather, the news, the markets, music. You search, you install, it is ready.

Free: Google Calendar, Outlook, mail, your phone notifications, weather, news, finance and music. Premium: the advanced ones, like connecting your own endpoint so Barto tells you about your ads.
Every plugin says whether it runs on your computer, on your phone or on both. You see it before installing, not after.
Christmas, Halloween and other dates: lines and voices for each season. They are bought separately and you switch them on from the app.
